About the role

RSPCA Westmorland is seeking an experienced and values-driven Branch Manager to lead the strategic and day-to-day operations of our Branch.

This is a key leadership role, responsible for managing staff and volunteers, overseeing animal welfare services, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the Branch. You will act as the public face of the charity locally, working closely with Trustees, staff, volunteers, and national RSPCA colleagues to deliver the highest standards of animal welfare.

With an exciting period of development ahead — including the opening of a new Cattery in Spring 2026 — this role offers the opportunity to make a lasting impact on animal welfare in the region.

About us

RSPCA Westmorland is a local branch of the RSPCA, supporting animal welfare across the area. We operate:

One charity shop
A Centre building hosting events, classes, meetings and offices
A new Cattery opening in 2026
The Branch employs around 10 staff, is supported by 40+ volunteers, and has an annual turnover of approximately £350,000.

The Branch Manager is line-managed by the Chair of the Trustees and directly manages the Shop Manager, Animal Welfare Manager and Fundraising Manager.

Key responsibilities

Leadership & Management

Provide strategic and operational leadership for the Branch
Develop and deliver business plans, budgets and performance targets
Line manage managers, staff and volunteers, ensuring effective performance and development
Prepare reports and present updates to the Board of Trustees
Ensure compliance with HR, health & safety, safeguarding, GDPR and charity governance requirements
Animal Welfare & Cattery Oversight

Oversee animal welfare services and cattery operations
Ensure compliance with RSPCA and ADCH welfare standards
Support teams with training, infection control and health & safety
Ensure accurate animal records and support responses to wildlife callouts
Income Generation & Community Engagement

Act as the public face of the Branch locally
Develop partnerships with local stakeholders, supporters and educational establishments
Work with Trustees and staff to grow income and ensure long-term sustainability
Support positive media coverage and volunteer retention
Financial Management

Oversee financial controls, budgets and reporting
Prepare annual budgets and present financial information to Trustees
Ensure annual accounts and reports are produced on time and to required standards
About you

Essential

Senior management experience, ideally in the charity, public or animal welfare sector
Proven experience managing staff and volunteers
Strong financial management and budget oversight experience
Experience working with or reporting to Trustees or Boards
Excellent leadership, communication and decision-making skills
Knowledge of charity governance, compliance and safeguarding
A strong commitment to animal welfare and RSPCA values
Desirable

Experience in animal welfare or rescue organisations
Fundraising, retail or community engagement experience
Knowledge of RSPCA Branch structures
Formal management or leadership qualification
